Moving Beyond Play: Purposeful Use of Robotics, Coding and Computational Thinking Skills

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Hear how one elementary school is working to implement a school-wide coding and robotics program that promotes computational thinking skills and coding concepts K-5.  In the spring of 2017, we received the funding to purchase one robot for each grade in our elementary school.  Hear how our technology integrationist has been working to develop a grade-level progression for teaching coding concepts and vocabulary, moving “beyond play,” identifying purposeful ways to utilize robotics with our learners.  See our process in action as we
-Focus on using one robot per grade level
-Explore guiding resources that helped us identify key concepts, vocabulary, and a grade-level progression (e.g. ISTE, Code.org’s curriculum, company resources, Twitter)
-Developed a tinker| research | try approach to adapt “high interest” robotic activities in the teaching of classroom content
-Specifically focus on math integration with 4 different robots and social studies and writing with Scratch.
-Hear about commonalities (and differences) that we have found in all six robots that could help anyone get started with fewer options and choices.
-Have an opportunity to try a math activity challenge for four different robots (e.g. Kibo, Blue-bot, Ozobot, Sphero)
