Virtual Escape Rooms for Educational Engagement

"Escape Rooms" are a popular form of group entertainment, involving collaborative puzzle solving with a strong story element. In 2018, we built "Riddle Mia This", an augmented reality smartphone application which sought to bring the escape room experience to the Minneapolis Institute of Art.  After a successful launch, we have begun exploring ways to replicate this experience in other environments, including within the K12 classroom.  This session will review the results we've seen from Riddle Mia This, and describe some ways the lessons from that project are being applied elsewhere. Participants will also learn about ways they can begin building these experiences on their own, either using our open source code or off-the-shelf tools.
